# Working on the website locally

> Install locked dependencies, configure a safe local environment, and run the website checks.

Use the Node version selected by the repository workflow; the current main-site workflow uses Node 22. Install from the committed lockfile.

```bash theme={null}
npm ci
npm run dev
```

## Local configuration

Copy `.env.example` to an ignored local environment file and configure only the features needed for your task. Use separate local credentials and cache namespaces. Do not point an automated test at private production records just because local configuration is incomplete.

## Next.js conventions

Read `AGENTS.md` and the relevant guide bundled in `node_modules/next/dist/docs/` before modifying application code. The repository uses a particular Next.js version whose conventions may differ from older examples.

## Required checks

```bash theme={null}
npm test
npm run lint
npm run build
npm audit --omit=dev
```

Run the appropriate Worker dry-runs when modifying gateway code. When another frontend is already running locally, choose a distinct port, for example `npm run dev -- --port 3002`.

## Common local differences

Data-dependent views may be unavailable without credentials. Local documentation search can require Mintlify authentication. Neither is a reason to weaken authorization, bypass origin checks, or publish an unverified production change.
